CHARLIE KA CHAKKAR

Aunt Nora/Bernice/Binge/ Blow/C/Charlie/Coke/Dust/Flake/Mojo/ are all the street names of the White powder Cocaine. It was discovered by German chemist Albert Neimann . It’s use was popularised by Sigmund Freud the famous psychoanalyst who was himself addicted to it . It was also an ingredient of Coca Cola at one point. Cocaine was initially used in the form of cocaine eye drops and in medicine for the relief of terminal cancer pain etc this was before the addictive nature of the drug was discovered.
In the 1990s Columbian cartels exported tonnes of cocaine to the US making it the most fashionable drug of choice.
Cocaine /Charlie is the party drug of the world …now however, it is not only for the movers and shakers but has reached the corporate rungs and is trickling down the social rungs and across all age groups in varying qualities and quantities .
It is snorted , rubbed on gums or injected. It is one of the drugs that can get you addicted from the very first use itself and requires higher and higher doses to get the same effect.
Cocaine affects the reward system in the brain that secretes the hormone dopamine.. It blocks the reuptake of dopamine in the brain which causes the brain to flood with the chemical and creates the high.
Short term effects
-Cocaine causes a short-lived, intense high that is immediately followed by a low.
-Loss of appetite
-Increased heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory failure can result from the combined use of Coke with alcohol. One tends to drink more without realising the increase in quantity as Coke is an upper and alcohol a downer.
-Dilated pupils
-Disturbed sleep patterns
-Bizarre, erratic, sometimes violent behavior – (one of our clients used to run on a treadmill at a speed of 20 and then jump off it )
-Paranoia – ( a client of ours felt anyone who was looking at him wanted to kill him and there were people coming after him -after this scare he came into treatment)
-Intense euphoria
-Anxiety and Depression
-Intense drug craving, Panic and psychosis
-Convulsions, seizures and sudden death from high doses (even one time), heart, kidney, brain and lung damage.
Long-term effects
-Permanent damage to blood vessels of heart and brain
-Cocaine is called the “heart attack” drug – it causes the heart to stop beating followed by an arrest in the breathing mechanism resulting in death.
-Depending on how it is consumed- if snorted it affects the sense of smell and damages the lining of the nostrils. If swallowed it can cause gangrene ( death of ) the intestines and stomach. If injected it can cause allergic reactions , ulcers, HCV , HIV as a result of shared needles.
-The term “dope fiend ” describes the negative side effects of constant cocaine use. As tolerance to the drug increases, it becomes necessary to take greater and greater quantities to get the same high. Prolonged daily use causes sleep deprivation and loss of appetite. A person can become psychotic , aggressive and begin to experience hallucinations especially auditory.
-Sexual problems, reproductive damage and infertility (for both men and women)
-The combination of cocaine and alcohol results in a chemical called cocaethylene which had severe cardiotoxic effects. The alcohol is consumed to bring down the effects of the cocaine high.
-The downside from the drug is a depression so severe that a person will do almost anything to get the drug—even commit murder or suicide
Children of cocaine-addicted mothers come into the world as addicts themselves. Many suffer birth defects and many other problems. They are called “crack babies”
The effects from Cocaine usage on the brain can last more than two years at times and at times the damage can be permanent .
Sooner than later it leads on to further addictions .. The important thing is the arrival at a solution to go beyond this in a conducive environment wherein every issue is addressed and the ability to not find the need to use surfaces from becoming aware of ones own experiences , meditations and counseling. We at Anatta facilitate this process in a client specific , confidential loving manner.

Theories-On-Causes-of-Addiction

There are many factors that can cause addiction-

The Disease Concept

The direct relationship between neurotransmitters and drug abuse was discovered in 1970 that some neurotransmitters have molecular similarity to those of plant opioids –opium, morphine and heroin.
The normal human brain has a certain set level of release, increase and stabilization of dopamine –the pleasure neurotransmitter. However, in an addict brain the level of pleasure achieved is higher than normal and there is no plateau or stabilization phase, on the contrary the levels dip down to below baseline. This simulates the effect of consumption of substance in an addictive brain. Eventually, with each succeeding drug or alcohol event, the addicted person must use more and more to get less and less of an effect (tolerance) — the levels continues falling further and further until they are using not to get high but just to get normal

The Genetic & Inheritance Concept

Children born of Alcoholic parents have 4% more chances to be alcoholics.
Staying with Biological parents or Foster parents has not made any difference
Theory of inheritance of alcoholism, suicidal depression and epilepsy is known in female children of alcoholic parents. Some inherit anger, some inherit depression but more often so; it is the self-destructive attitude.

The Dysfunctional family Concept

Dysfunctional family members have common symptoms and behavior patterns as a result of their experiences within the family structure. This tends to reinforce the dysfunctional behavior, either through enabling or perpetuation. The family unit can be affected by a variety of factors

The following symptoms occur in most dysfunctional families:

Lack of empathy, understanding, and sensitivity toward certain family members; while, on the other hand, expressing extreme empathy toward one or more family members who have (real or perceived) “special needs”

Denial (a refusal to acknowledge abusive behaviour; also known as the “elephant in the room”) Extremes in conflict (either too much fighting or insufficient arguing between family members)

Inadequate or missing boundaries for self (e.g., tolerating inappropriate treatment from others, failing to express what is acceptable and unacceptable treatment, tolerance of physical, emotional or sexual abuse)

Unequal or unfair treatment of one or more family members due to their gender, age (e.g., seniors, children), abilities, race, economic status, etc. (may include frequent appeasement of one member at the expense of others, or an uneven enforcement of rules).

Abnormal sexual behavior such as incest

Abuse in childhood in any form emotional or physical.

Divorced or separated parents in continuous conflict, or parents who should separate, but do not (to the detriment of their children)

People living in such an environment can easily fall prey to addictions as a relief from stifling family circumstances.

Behavioral Concept

A Maladaptive Personality who cannot adjust to his surroundings and to his internal milieu can be more prone to addictions.

Whatever may be the cause and theories related to the same..if a fracture has to heal it has to be plastered. Likewise , the addiction has to be treated first and in the process the envelope of one’s life is turned inside out, and issues dealt with in a most compassionate, loving, confidential manner. We at Anatta provide the right mileu for the same.

Synthetic drugs

Synthetic drugs are taking the world of drug usage by a storm. Theseare chemically altered or laced substances mimicking marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamines and sold over the counters in shops.

The packaging of the drugs always indicate “Not fit for human consumption” but are blatantly sold.
Every 2-3 weeks a new altered synthetic drug hits the market even

before the authorities can test them to know their effects and danger or even legislate to decide their illegality . The loopholes are first figured out in the regulations by replacing a banned chemical compound in a synthetic cannabinoid or cathinones as some are called with a new formulation unknown to authorities . So consumers are totally unaware of the reactions of some of these chemicals .. Thus they are very dangerous as they contain chemicals that can be several times more stronger than the original chemical compound they are mimicking. There have been several fatalities linked to use and abuse of synthetic drugs.

Some of the Synthetic drugs and their effects:

Synthetic Marijuana-
Sold as incense, products like Spice, G-Four, K2 ,Yucatan fire, Skunk, Moon rocks, Mojo etc. These are chemicals mimicking as cannabinoids sprayed on random herbs/ leaves and sold . Effects- extreme anxiety, nausea, paranoea, confusion, hallucinations. It has also been associated with elevated blood pressure, reduced blood supply to the heart.
Long term effects- affects short term memory, motivation, emotional instability, reasoning, learning and stamina are adversely affected.

5 –MeO-DMT
Is made synthetically and also derived from the venom sac and skin of a type of toad Bufo alvarius. It is vaporized, insufflated or injected. The experiences are immersive, like a rushing sensation , a shifting of perspective, of short duration , there is an experience of a void, dissociation . Excessive usage can also result in death.

LSZ Lysergic acide 2,4 dimethylazetidide
It is an ergoloid or synthetic form of LSD Effects –can result in severe paranoea.

MXE
MXE is a “replacement dissociative” that mimics the effects of drugs like Ketamine and PCP. Dissociatives disrupt the actions of the brain chemical glutamate at certain types of receptors on nerve cells
throughout the brain causing the distortion of perceptions of sight and sound and producing a feeling of detachment from the environment and one’s self. Dissociatives can impair vision and the hearing, cause anxiety, memory loss, impaired motor skills, numbness, and many other
unpredictable symptoms that can last for hours and sometimes days.

Flakka and bath salts
Flakka and bath salts also called cathinones are”replacement euphoric stimulants and empathogens” and are meant to mimic the effects of both amphetamines and hallucinogens. It can also contain mephedrone.. -Bath salts are sold as crystalline powder in a small bag with names such as Ivory Wave, Blow, Red Dove, Vanilla Sky Aura, Zeus 2, Zoom, Bliss, Blue Silk, White Lightning, Ocean, Charge,White Dove and others. Flakka contains alpha-PVP, a
of cathinone, the amphetamine-like drug found in bath salts which was banned in 2011. These drugs cause a surge in two chemicals: the feel-good chemical dopamine (responsible for the euphoric sensations) and norepineprhine (which raises heart rate and blood pressure and can make us more alert).
-Excessive use has been linked with feelings of extreme anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations, and violent behavior., seizures, insomnia, chest pain, self mutilation.

- Users frequently describe the high as “horrible” and report seeing demons, monsters, foreign soldiers or aliens. Some have symptoms for 2-3 days. Some require long term psychiatric care because their symptoms don’t improve.

Long term physical effects- Kidney failure, Liver failure, Increased risk of suicide , long term mental illness etc.

In India as in other countries ,these drugs are available through mail order sites where they are sold as research chemicals. As a result they are not marked as scheduled drugs in India nor covered in the NDPS act due to which they get cleared at customs . Thus they enter the country
legally ready for consumption.

Awareness about the solution to addiction is as important as awarenessof the problem- ie treatment in a voluntary, confidential, conducive,
compassionate environment.

Effects of Substance Abuse

Addiction to substances affects not only the individual, family but society as a whole.
On the Individual
Addictions lead to an increase in risk behavior such as having sex with commercial sexual workers, having sex without using condoms. Sharing needles while fixing. Both these activities result in the spread of diseases like STDs, HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C etc. This further weakens the social fabric as more and more young blood gets afflicted by various ailments  due to the risk behaviors enhanced by addictions that dull the sensorium and rationalization capabilities.
Because the purity and dosage of illegal drugs are uncontrolled, drug overdose is a constant risk
Many drug users engage in criminal activity, such as burglary and prostitution, to raise the money to buy drugs, and some drugs, especially alcohol, are associated with violent behavior.
Effects on the Family
    - The user's preoccupation with the substance, plus its effects on mood and performance, can lead to marital problems and poor work performance or dismissal.
    - Destructive patterns of co-dependency can develop amongst family members.
    - Pregnant drug users, because of the drugs themselves or poor self-care in general, bear a much higher rate of low birth-weight babies than the average. Many drugs (e.g., crack and heroin) cross the placental barrier, resulting in addicted babies who go through withdrawal soon after birth, and fetal alcohol syndrome can affect children of mothers who consume alcohol during pregnancy.
  - Children with substance-abusing parents are also at higher risk of physical abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse.  As an example, it has been estimated that up to 75% of all incest incidents involve use of alcohol on the part of the perpetrator [Thompson, 1990].
- Children of substance abusers can take to substance abuse themselves in order to cope.

Effects On Society
Productivity and increased medical costs to society.
80 percent of all prison incarcerations; 75 percent of all divorces; 65       percent of all child abuse cases; 55 percent of all domestic assaults; half or more of all accidental deaths from fire, falls and drowning; half of all traffic fatalities; 40 percent of work-related fatal injuries; 35 percent of all rapes; and one-third of all suicides.(Governor’s Task Force on Substance Abuse, 1998)
It affects the person’s productivity and efficiency as it takes away his working hours resulting in absenteeism at work. This consequently results in loss of man hours, affecting the productivity of the company and consequently the economy of the society.
Loss of job results in financial instability in the family resulting in a breakdown of the family structure.
There is Loss of life and limb resulting from drunken driving.

However, one has to understand that when any substance usage reaches the stage of addiction it is the substance that controls the individual and not the other way around and the progress to addiction can be so insidious that it is too late before one knows it. Thus what a person addicted to substance use requires is compassion , love and understanding ; at the same time being aware to not enable the addiction but to motivate the person to do something about it ie take the help of a rehabilitation facility to help the person to go beyond a life of addiction.
Anatta Humanversity is one such rehab centers in India where compassion, love, care and confidentiality is primary towards the client. Alcohol rehab is the best way to get out of alcohol addiction and it can be done by the best rehab in India i.e Anatta.

CRYSTAL METH

Ice, glass, speed, hot ice, quartz, blade, cristy, batu crank, chalk… heard of these names ? they are all street names for Methamphetamine/ crystal meth .
Methamphetamine  is an old drug which has come back with a bang with easier methods of manufacture.

History
It was first manufactured in Germany in 1888. During the second world war it was discovered that the crystalline from was water soluble to make it injectable. it was given to soldiers on both sides of the war to stay awake ad focused. Large quantities were given by the Japanese to their Kamikaze soldiers before their suicide bombing missions. In the 1950s it was used to treat depression and as an aid to dieting as it kills the appetite ; students began using it to focus on studies and by the 1960s easy availability of the injectable form then made the abuse more rampant and has reached alarming proportions globally. in 1970 US declared it an illegal substance. in the 1990s the Mexican mafia established huge meth labs in California then spread to Europe and across the world.

In India crystal meth has entered the drug scene since 2years and addictions to it has increased by leaps and bounds. In Asia it is now produced mainly in Thailand, China and Myanmar.

Crystal methamphetamine is methamphetamine in a crystalline form . It is consumed orally , or as an injectable drug or chased.

It is highly addictive in nature probably from the very first use  and has become a cheap substitute to cocaine.
Long term use and addictive use results in several changes physically and psychologically.
Physically
Acute effects
It gives a rush a strong sense of happiness euphoria  confidence hyperactivity and energy. The effects last for 6-8 hours Upto 24hours
The physical effects of methamphetamine can include loss of appetite, hyperactivity, dilated pupils, excessive sweating, restlessness, dry mouth and teeth grinding (leading to "meth mouth"), headache, irregular heartbeat, rapid breathing, high blood pressure, low blood pressure, high body temperature, diarrhea, constipation, blurred vision, dizziness, twitching, numbness, tremors, dry skin, acne, and pale appearance.
Chronic physical effects
Premature aging , wrinkles, skin ulcers, tooth and gum decay ,  alopecia areata , rapid weight loss, insomnia, brain damage, stroke, heart ailments, chronic fatigue, muscle wasting , it is toxic to the nerves, sensations as if something is biting from within, crawling under the skin resulting in picking of skin  etc.

Psychological effects
Acute - paranoia, aggression, suicidal thoughts and ideations, hallucinations , increased libido resulting in risky sexual behaviors resulting in sexually transmitted diseases and HIV , obsessive behaviors, restlessness, methamphetamine psychosis etc.

We at Anatta have had consecutive crystal meth users coming into treatment in the past several months from the younger age group of early 20s . For us that is a very sombre indication that  addiction to this drug is on the rise and also in combination with alcohol at times with other drugs. Some users drink alcohol to cut the high of meth but due to the  euphoria of meth the alcohol consumed is much more in quantity and the polydrug addiction makes things worse.
Internationally it is known as a very difficult addiction to treat.
The treatment of meth addicts takes longer , the detoxification period is longer due to the severe physical and psychological withdrawals. Following that the emotional swings the person undergoes takes longer to settle down. we have however found meditation to be a fantastic tool along with counseling and homoeopathic medications to enable a faster healing  process.

There is a solution available and that is Anatta Humanversity. It is an alcohol rehab as well as a rehab for drug. Take help of this addiction treatment center and get treated quickly. Now help is only a phone call away.

INHALANT ABUSE

Ever seen a kid sniffing something from a pouch or a cloth on railway stations? Seen a school kid’s white ink getting over sooner than it has been bought? Office supplies ordered more than required especially cleaning fluids, glue etc? Most likely you are looking at an addiction to inhalants.
Inhalants are drugs that are rarely taken via any other route of administration though there are other illicit drugs that can be inhaled too. The term of usage is called “huffing.”
Products Abused as Inhalants
Volatile solvents—liquids that vaporize at room temperature
Industrial or household products, including paint thinners or removers, degreasers, dry-cleaning fluids, gasoline, and lighter fluid
Art or office supply solvents, including correction fluids, felt-tip marker fluid, electronic contact cleaners, and glue
Aerosols—sprays that contain propellants and solvents
Household aerosol propellants in items such as spray paints, hair or deodorant sprays, fabric protector sprays, aerosol computer cleaning products, and vegetable oil sprays
Gases—found in household or commercial products and used as medical anesthetics
Household or commercial products, including butane lighters and propane tanks, whipped cream aerosols or dispensers (whippets), and refrigerant gases
Medical aesthetics, such as ether, chloroform, halothane, and nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”)
Nitrites—used primarily as sexual enhancers
Organic nitrites are volatiles that include cyclohexyl, butyl, and amyl nitrites, commonly known as “poppers.” Amyl nitrite is still used in certain diagnostic medical procedures. When marketed for illicit use, organic nitrites are often sold in small brown bottles labelled as “video head cleaner,” “room odorizer,” “leather cleaner,” or “liquid aroma.”
These products are not considered as drugs of abuse but have been found to be so more so in young children than older teens or adults.
Methods of usage
Abusers of inhalants breathe them in through the nose or mouth in a variety of ways (known as “huffing”). They may sniff or snort fumes from a container or dispenser (such as a glue bottle or a marking pen or white ink), spray aerosols (such as computer cleaning dusters) directly into their nose or mouth, or place a chemical-soaked rag in their mouth. Abusers may also inhale fumes from a balloon or a plastic or paper bag. Although the high produced by inhalants usually lasts just a few minutes, abusers often try to prolong it by continuing to inhale repeatedly over several hours.
Effects on Brain and Body of Inhalant abuse
Repeated abuse of inhalants are addictive.
Inhalant effects are similar to that of alcohol- slurred speech, lack of coordination, dizziness , euphoria etc..  They can also experience hallucinations and delusions.  They may feel loss of control of self with light headedness and a lingering headache
Breathing difficulties also occur with at times stoppage of breath. There can be abdominal discomfort , nausea, ulcers, vomiting and vomiting of blood. Irregular heart beats might occur. Nervous system damage happens in the form of affection of sensations, muscle power and coordination, degeneration of brain function and capacity. Liver functions are also affected.
Inhalant abuse and addiction in India is becoming more prevalent amongst urban street children, especially addiction to cobbler’s glue, petrol fumes etc Even the well heeled school children are getting addicted to white ink, glue etc.  I have seen children afflicted with tremors, in coordination, confusion with difficulty to function psychologically or their capacity etc.
We at Anatta provide the right environs for growth , healing and a return to a regular vibrant life. We are the best alcohol rehab centres and drug addiction treatment centres in India. So take advantage of the most convenient and luxurious rehab centre in India.

QUESTIONNAIRES TO IDENTIFY CHEMICAL DEPENDENCE AND CO DEPENDENCY

There are standard questionnaires by which one can identify the existence of an alcohol or drug problem that requires treatment.
The most common questionnaire for alcohol and drug use is the CAGE questionnaire
CAGE Questions
1. Have you ever felt you should cut down on your drinking?
2. Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
3. Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking?
4. Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover (eye-opener)?
CAGE Questions Adapted to Include Drug Use (CAGE-AID)
1. Have you ever felt you ought to cut down on your drinking or drug use?
2. Have people annoyed you by criticizing you’re drinking or drug use?
3. Have you felt bad or guilty about your drinking or drug use?
4. Have you ever had a drink or used drugs first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover (eye-opener)?
Scoring: Item responses on the CAGE questions are scored 0 for "no" and 1 for "yes" answers, with a higher score being an indication of alcohol problems. A total score of two or greater is considered clinically significant. However even one positive score indicates the presence of an alcohol / drug problem that requires treatment in the form of rehabilitation.

Likewise there are questionnaires to identify Co-dependency in a family member or close loved one of the person addicted to alcohol / drugs
1. Did you ever lose time from work due to your relationship with an addicted person?
2. Have your relationships ever made your life unhappy?
3. Have your relationships affected your reputation?
4. Have you ever felt remorse after manipulating a situation?
5. Did you ever control situations to get money to pay debts household bills or otherwise solve financial difficulties that belong to someone else?
6. Has your involvement in a relationship caused a decrease in your ambition or efficiency?
7. After a fight or disagreement, did you feel you must get even?
8. After winning an argument, did you have a strong urge to restate your point?
9. Did you often stay in a relationship until your last hope was gone?
10. Did you ever borrow money to finance another person's addiction or associated crisis?
11. Have you ever sold anything to finance another person's addiction or associated crisis?
12. Were you reluctant to purchase necessary items because it may cause a disagreement?
13. Did your relationships make you care less of the welfare of yourself and your family?
14. Did you ever stay in a degrading or dangerous situation longer than you planned?
15. Have you ever dragged old hurts into discussions about current items?
16. Have you ever committed, or considered committing, and illegal act to finance someone's addiction?
17. Did your relationships cause you to have difficulty in sleeping?
18. Do arguments, disappointments or frustrations create within you an urge to change someone else?
19. Did you ever have an idea that if loved ones would only see things your way, life would be much better?
20. Have you ever considered self-destruction as a result of your reactions or relationships?

Answering yes to five or more of these questions is an indication that codependency has become a problem in your life.
If you test positive for either of the above tests you would need to consult a substance abuse counselor who will guide you to the next course of action required to be taken. It can vary upon the situation. They may consult for alcohol rehabilitation treatment or rehab for drug or any other treatment that may work on you.

ACCEPTING HELP

The need to  “fit in” is an universal human trait - most youth do several things-dress alike keep up with the trends etc some of them being  drinking and smoking cigarettes- like a “rite of passage” and lo! It is an entry into the world of parties –being part of, etc.. the shy gangly adolescent turns into a sauve happening kid popular amongst the guys and girls alike.  The intake begins in a small manner as that is enough to give a high, loosen the tongue and the inhibitions. In the flush of youth, studies are managed and the drinks increase to 6-7-8 . from weekends to two or three times a week.
The increase is noted by friends, warnings are issued but ridiculed by the young man - “ be a man-drink like me !”  Is help accepted? Life is going great guns, the studies are done, the girls are there one or many .. more often one too many than one.  The new job is gotten, a fat pay packet to boot.  The alcohol flows, the money too flows generously “friends “ benefit.
Slowly the hangovers take over... waking up with heavy heads become a norm…  the drinks are tried to be controlled now, the hangover hidden with coffee and soon enough through a drink to get over the hangover as the body and mind is in shambles ... focus is lost.. meetings are missed, absenteeism sets in... one tries to “ cut down to two or three drinks” succeeds for a few days then one fight at the office or home front, the three becomes 10 in no time and without any inkling as to how it reached there... the intention had been just have the three drinks and pacify the girlfriend/wife [This is the compulsive nature of an addictive mind taking over]  After three all intentions get drowned in the bottle... the next morning one wakes up with absolutely no memory of what transpired the night before- a blackout . The blackout starts becoming frequent. [Is help accepted here?] The mind remains more befuddled...The thinking changes… It becomes more grandiose, emotions are exaggerated, mountains are made out of molehills- though alcohol s temporarily not there because it is untreated the mental habits do not change.  Everything triggers an emotional reaction either expressed or in expressed. Life revolves around planning to get the next drink or start drinking.  [The obsession takes over]
Friends start avoiding as Dr. Jekyll turns to Mr. Hyde post a few drinks.. Friendships are lost.. guilt and remorse sets in.. and to forget it , guess what- more drinks are drowned.. but does one forget? No- cause the drink only magnifies the hurt existent real or imagined. [is help accepted now]
Again the decision to stop drinks.. but in the next one day, one hour or next five minutes the man finds a glass in his hand and a half a bottle down. It is baffling! How did that happen? [it is a cunning baffling disease- and the time from a thought of a drink to an intense thought to craving to obsession and compulsive drinking can take a few seconds to minutes to hours or days ] Help accepted?
The family intervenes. The hands are unsteady the body tremors cannot hold a glass; yet the thought” I can handle it” The liver is fired – on the verge of cirrhosis on the hospital bed- and yet the thought “I can handle the bottle” the struggle goes on; the life revolves around controlling the drink and going back to “social drinking” of 2-3pegs, a futile illusionary dream! [ this is the denial of dependency] The family tries to control the drink- drink wine- drink at home- I will drink with you- you are taking advantage of us! Another futile illusionary dream! [ the denial of the co dependent] Is help accepted?  For, now it has reached the stage of Addiction – “first the man drinks the drink, then the drink drinks the drink, then the drink drinks the man. “
The drinking that was fun at a point  and solution at times now has become a problem!
But one is unable to stop for long on one’s own... people around “society” at large think that the man is a drunk ..he can stop on his own but he is selfish and wants to enjoy life at the cost of his family. However, the person addicted drinks now to keep away pain- physical and psychological and there is no more “fun” in it. [ is help asked for and accepted?]He/she is sick and tired  of feeling sick and tired
The family approaches psychiatrists or an experiential addiction counselor for help ... the person who is chemically dependent now meets the counselor. An experiential counselor is one who has lived a life of addiction to drugs or alcohol and has accepted treatment and gone beyond the need to use alcohol or drugs for a substantial length of time. The light is seen at the end of the tunnel... identification is established... he understands my story, as my story has been his story... and if he can do it then I too have hopes of reaching where he has reached today and he will guide me into doing the things he did to arrive at where he is.
Help is finally looked for in the right place and accepted. Thus it is seen that one cannot predict when a person can ask for and accept help.
This is half the battle won.
We at Anatta are here to help those who accept help and to enable those who resist to arrive at a decision to accept help. We have our rehabilitation centers scattered in most parts of India like rehabilitation Center in Pune, rehabilitation center in Nagpur and drugs and alcohol rehabilitation centers in Delhi. Come to us and we will help you see life in a new way without alcohol and drugs.

GOING BEYOND EMOTIONS

Man lives in his mind.
Most of his activity revolves around the mind. As a result the body has been neglected and the unity of mind body has been shaken. The result- stress, emotional angst etc... we color every experience with emotions , thus deluding us from reality.
Have you ever eaten something very delicious and wanted to hold on to that taste ? For that, if you stay hungry and do not brush your teeth the whole day..what do you think will happen? The next morning, you wake up hungry, stinking  and grumpy and the taste that one so wanted to hold on to is now only in the mind...  this is exactly what we do with our emotions .. Whether happy or sad, we tend to hold on to them till they raise a stink....
We find ourselves living in more than one mind at a time trying to think why another person behaved in a particular manner , what will people think  if I did this etc. ; living in one mind itself is tiring , imagine living in multiple minds- exhausting!
In addiction  , the addict is at an advantage because the problem is so in the face that he has to do something about it. With the rest of the world the proverbial carpet is ever present.
But do things actually get brushed under the carpet? The incidents will, but the emotions are held on to in a conscious or unconscious form either suppressed or repressed... which then colors all our responses to incidents in our lives.
Thus, we can conclude that it is our emotions that are behind every so called “ issue” in our lives. “Gurus” tell us go beyond emotions, detach ourselves from emotions, be in the present, renounce our relations, material things etc but can we “renounce” our minds? And HOW do we go beyond all our emotions?
Our mind never allows us to see reality as it is, for, it takes us to the past and the future [ both non -existent]  thus enabling us never to  be in the present. A story- two monks come across a woman waiting to cross a river. One of the monks volunteers to help and carries the woman across, lets her down and goes his way. The younger monk begins arguing for 3 hours about how could the monk touch a woman , it is forbidden in their sect and is a sin… the older monk quietly tells him,  I dropped off the woman 3 hours ago..I see my friend, that you are still carrying her... this, is what we do with all our emotions.
The ability of going beyond emotions is inherently present within each of us, we only have to become aware of it and live it.
A few methods we incorporate :
Writing
The writing is in a prescribed manner. We write all the incidents in our lives as they happened  , without embellishments or adornment  of philosophy and retrospective analysis. It is describing the incident as it happened. Then, to make it more interesting write down the emotions you felt at the time separately. Also add the emotions you feel now when writing the incident. If you sit with yourself for at least 45mins everyday and keep writing all the incidents in your life in this method ; slowly you will realize that you develop a detachment from the emotions one has held on to over the years.
Meditation
Regular practice of meditation releases suppressed and repressed emotions stored in our cellular memory and changes the structure of our brains, reducing the size of the areas that cause emotional fluctuations thereby changing the responses to stressors around us ; the areas of our brains that regulate compassion and empathy increases in size. Meditation keeps us in the present moment.
Yoga
Yoga balances the interiority of an individual ,keeping one in the present enabling an increase in awareness of our body and mind.
Being present
Extending this practice of being present to everything we do in life. While eating eat , while drinking water drink, while walking, walk.... cut out the multitasking.
Being present and doing all of the above to do so , eventually, helps us to deal with incidents in our lives without attaching emotions to them and seeing them in all their reality and we learn to truly “respond “ instead of “ reacting”.

MEDITATION

In life if we zoom in closely all crises are emotional crises...we do not see reality as it is but always tend to colour it with emotions that results in ”stress” or distress. In addiction too, once the person is in rehabilitation treatment centres and the substance is stopped and in the treatment process the real issues that crop up are all of emotional unmanageability.
We assume that over the years we have “dealt with” past injuries or incidents that have affected us. Then why does illness strike us? Why is it that we react untowardly to a situation that does not call for such a reaction? This is because the emotions that we thought we have dealt with have only been suppressed or worse, repressed for they have been stored in the cells of our body. Cellular memory has been discovered by science today.
Today it has been proved that the ancient eastern sciences of meditation enable one to attain a balance which is the result of actual structural and biochemical changes that take place in the brain due to meditative practices proved by the advent of advanced CT and functional MRI machines and other technical devices..
Meditation techniques are a bridge towards actual meditation. They are very scientific and developed over centuries by those who have attained.
They have been developed based on pure experience and observations of being aware and taking us beyond emotions.
Effects of Suppression of Emotions
Once any emotion is triggered, if the flow is impeded by suppression of the same, the energy that has resulted in the release of so many biochemical actions on the body and brain is unable to retract these changes. As a result, the chemicals bring about a change at the cellular level and can come up eventually with physical ailments like hypertension, migraines and even cancer in the long run. Psychological ailments like anxiety neuroses, depression, personality disorders might result. In the current scenario of society, meditation might not be directly possible due to these various suppressions and repressions that block the flow of natural energy. Hence the process of catharsis is very essential.
Active meditations enable this catharsis to take place in a guided manner making way for an experience of a meditative state.
What is meditation? Meditation is not sitting with closed “concentrating” on the breath or something. Let us try an experiment—close your eyes and be “aware” of the breathing that is happening in your body.. it is an involuntary process..be aware of it through the rise and fall of your abdomen for a few moments..open your eyes.. Were there any thoughts in your mind for that time? No? You just experienced a state of meditation. This state of ‘no mind’ is the state of meditation .Regular practice of different techniques takes us to that state and eventually we realise that we take life moment to moment and respond instead of reacting.
Current Scientific Studies on Meditation
Researchers at Harvard, Yale, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have found the first evidence that meditation can alter the physical structure of our brains. Brain scans they conducted reveal that in experienced meditators increased thickness in parts of the brain that deal with attention and processing sensory input & associated with memory, sense of self, empathy and stress is seen. Likewise, the area of the brain that is responsible for emotional reactions-the amygdala is seen to reduce in size. Thus, though the stressors in the environment remain the same the responses to them change. Thus meditation is also very psychotherapeutic!

Conclusion
Science is still in a fledgling stage to discover the actual Meditative state. However, the individual experience of the state is the only proof required. But for a person with addiction, Anatta Humanversity being a drug & alcohol rehabilitation center will get a person out of the addiction in the best possible manner.
