Aunt Nora/Bernice/Binge/ Blow/C/Charlie/Coke/Dust/Flake/Mojo/ are all the street names of the White powder Cocaine. It was discovered by German chemist Albert Neimann . It’s use was popularised by Sigmund Freud the famous psychoanalyst who was himself addicted to it . It was also an ingredient of Coca Cola at one point. Cocaine was initially used in the form of cocaine eye drops and in medicine for the relief of terminal cancer pain etc this was before the addictive nature of the drug was discovered.
In the 1990s Columbian cartels exported tonnes of cocaine to the US making it the most fashionable drug of choice.
Cocaine /Charlie is the party drug of the world …now however, it is not only for the movers and shakers but has reached the corporate rungs and is trickling down the social rungs and across all age groups in varying qualities and quantities .
It is snorted , rubbed on gums or injected. It is one of the drugs that can get you addicted from the very first use itself and requires higher and higher doses to get the same effect.
Cocaine affects the reward system in the brain that secretes the hormone dopamine.. It blocks the reuptake of dopamine in the brain which causes the brain to flood with the chemical and creates the high.
Short term effects
-Cocaine causes a short-lived, intense high that is immediately followed by a low.

-Increased heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory failure can result from the combined use of Coke with alcohol. One tends to drink more without realising the increase in quantity as Coke is an upper and alcohol a downer.

-The term “dope fiend ” describes the negative side effects of constant cocaine use. A person can become psychotic , aggressive and begin to experience hallucinations especially auditory.
-Sexual problems, reproductive damage and infertility (for both men and women)
-The combination of cocaine and alcohol results in a chemical called cocaethylene which had severe cardiotoxic effects. The alcohol is consumed to bring down the effects of the cocaine high.
-The downside from the drug is a depression so severe that a person will do almost anything to get the drug—even commit murder or suicide

There are many factors that can cause addiction-

The Disease Concept

The direct relationship between neurotransmitters and drug abuse was discovered in 1970 that some neurotransmitters have molecular similarity to those of plant opioids –opium, morphine and heroin.

The normal human brain has a certain set level of release, increase and stabilization of dopamine –the pleasure neurotransmitter. However, in an addict brain the level of pleasure achieved is higher than normal and there is no plateau or stabilization phase, on the contrary the levels dip down to below baseline. This simulates the effect of consumption of substance in an addictive brain. Eventually, with each succeeding drug or alcohol event, the addicted person must use more and more to get less and less of an effect (tolerance) — the levels continues falling further and further until they are using not to get high but just to get normal

The Genetic & Inheritance Concept

Children born of Alcoholic parents have 4% more chances to be alcoholics.

Abnormal sexual behavior such as incest

Abuse in childhood in any form emotional or physical.

Divorced or separated parents in continuous conflict, or parents who should separate, but do not (to the detriment of their children)

Synthetic drugs

Synthetic drugs are taking the world of drug usage by a storm. Theseare chemically altered or laced substances mimicking marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamines and sold over the counters in shops.

The packaging of the drugs always indicate “Not fit for human consumption” but are blatantly sold.
Every 2-3 weeks a new altered synthetic drug hits the market even

before the authorities can test them to know their effects and danger or even legislate to decide their illegality . The loopholes are first figured out in the regulations by replacing a banned chemical compound in a synthetic cannabinoid or cathinones as some are called with a new formulation unknown to authorities . So consumers are totally unaware of the reactions of some of these chemicals .. Thus they are very dangerous as they contain chemicals that can be several times more stronger than the original chemical compound they are mimicking. There have been several fatalities linked to use and abuse of synthetic drugs.

Some of the Synthetic drugs and their effects:

Synthetic Marijuana-
Sold as incense, products like Spice, G-Four, K2 ,Yucatan fire, Skunk, Moon rocks, Mojo etc.These are chemicals mimicking as cannabinoids sprayed on random herbs/ leaves and sold . Effects- extreme anxiety, nausea, paranoea, confusion, hallucinations. It has also been associated with elevated blood pressure, reduced blood supply to the heart.
Long term effects- affects short term memory, motivation, emotional instability, reasoning, learning and stamina are adversely affected.

5 –MeO-DMT
Is made synthetically and also derived from the venom sac and skin of a type of toad Bufo alvarius. It is vaporized, insufflated or injected. The experiences are immersive, like a rushing sensation , a shifting of perspective, of short duration , there is an experience of a void, dissociation . Excessive usage can also result in death.

LSZ Lysergic acide 2,4 dimethylazetidide
It is an ergoloid or synthetic form of LSD Effects –can result in severe paranoea.

MXE
MXE is a “replacement dissociative” that mimics the effects of drugs like Ketamine and PCP. Dissociatives disrupt the actions of the brain chemical glutamate at certain types of receptors on nerve cells
throughout the brain causing the distortion of perceptions of sight and sound and producing a feeling of detachment from the environment and one’s self. Dissociatives can impair vision and the hearing, cause anxiety, memory loss, impaired motor skills, numbness, and many other
unpredictable symptoms that can last for hours and sometimes days.

Flakka and bath salts
Flakka and bath salts also called cathinones are”replacement euphoric stimulants and empathogens” and are meant to mimic the effects of both amphetamines and hallucinogens. It can also contain mephedrone.. -Bath salts are sold as crystalline powder in a small bag with names such as Ivory Wave, Blow, Red Dove, Vanilla Sky Aura, Zeus 2, Zoom, Bliss, Blue Silk, White Lightning, Ocean, Charge,White Dove and others. Flakka contains alpha-PVP, a
of cathinone, the amphetamine-like drug found in bath salts which was banned in 2011. These drugs cause a surge in two chemicals: the feel-good chemical dopamine (responsible for the euphoric sensations) and norepineprhine (which raises heart rate and blood pressure and can make us more alert).
-Excessive use has been linked with feelings of extreme anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations, and violent behavior., seizures, insomnia, chest pain, self mutilation.

- Users frequently describe the high as “horrible” and report seeing demons, monsters, foreign soldiers or aliens. Some have symptoms for 2-3 days. Some require long term psychiatric care because their symptoms don’t improve.

Long term physical effects- Kidney failure, Liver failure, Increased risk of suicide , long term mental illness etc.

In India as in other countries ,these drugs are available through mail order sites where they are sold as research chemicals. As a result they are not marked as scheduled drugs in India nor covered in the NDPS act due to which they get cleared at customs . Thus they enter the country

Addiction to substances affects not only the individual, family but society as a whole.
On the Individual
Addictions lead to an increase in risk behavior such as having sex with commercial sexual workers, having sex without using condoms. Sharing needles while fixing.   - Children with substance-abusing parents are also at higher risk of physical abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse.  As an example, it has been estimated that up to 75% of all incest incidents involve use of alcohol on the part of the perpetrator [Thompson, 1990].

Effects On Society
Productivity and increased medical costs to society.
80 percent of all prison incarcerations; 75 percent of all divorces; 65       percent of all child abuse cases; 55 percent of all domestic assaults; half or more of all accidental deaths from fire, falls and drowning; half of all traffic fatalities; 40 percent of work-related fatal injuries; 35 percent of all rapes; and one-third of all suicides.(Governor’s Task Force on Substance Abuse, 1998)

Ice, glass, speed, hot ice, quartz, blade,cristy, batu crank,chalk… heard of these names ? they are all street names for Methamphetamine/ crystal meth .
Methamphetamine  is an old drug which has come back with a bang with easier methods of manufacture.

History
It was first manufactured in Germany in 1888. During the second world war it was discovered that the crystalline from was water soluble to make it injectable. it was given to soldiers on both sides of the war to stay awake ad focused. Large quantities were given by the Japanese to their Kamikaze soldiers before their suicide bombing missions. In the 1950s it was used to treat depression and as an aid to dieting as it kills the appetite ; students began using it to focus on studies and by the 1960s easy availability of the injectable form then made the abuse more rampant and has reached alarming proportions globally. in 1970 US declared it an illegal substance. in the 1990s the Mexican mafia established huge meth labs in California then spread to Europe and across the world.

In India crystal meth has entered the drug scene since 2years and addictions to it has increased by leaps and bounds.In Asia it is now produced mainly in Thailand, China and Myanmar.

Crystal methamphetamine is methamphetamine in a crystalline form . It is consumed orally , or as an injectable drug or chased.

It is highly addictive in nature probably from the very first use  and has become a cheap substitute to cocaine.
Long term use and addictive use results in several changes physically and psychologically.
Physically
Acute effects

INHALANT ABUSE

Inhalants are drugs that are rarely taken via any other route of administration though there are other illicit drugs that can be inhaled too. The term of usage is called “huffing.”
Products Abused as Inhalants
Volatile solvents—liquids that vaporize at room temperature
Industrial or household products, including paint thinners or removers, degreasers, dry-cleaning fluids, gasoline, and lighter fluid

Gases—found in household or commercial products and used as medical anesthetics
Household or commercial products, including butane lighters and propane tanks, whipped cream aerosols or dispensers (whippets), and refrigerant gases
Medical aesthetics, such as ether, chloroform, halothane, and nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”)
Nitrites—used primarily as sexual enhancers
Organic nitrites are volatiles that include cyclohexyl, butyl, and amyl nitrites, commonly known as “poppers.” Amyl nitrite is still used in certain diagnostic medical procedures. When marketed for illicit use, organic nitrites are often sold in small brown bottles labelled as “video head cleaner,” “room odorizer,” “leather cleaner,” or “liquid aroma.”
These products are not considered as drugs of abuse but have been found to be so more so in young children than older teens or adults.
Methods of usage
Abusers of inhalants breathe them in through the nose or mouth in a variety of ways (known as “huffing”). They may sniff or snort fumes from a container or dispenser (such as a glue bottle or a marking pen or white ink), spray aerosols (such as computer cleaning dusters) directly into their nose or mouth, or place a chemical-soaked rag in their mouth. Abusers may also inhale fumes from a balloon or a plastic or paper bag. Although the high produced by inhalants usually lasts just a few minutes, abusers often try to prolong it by continuing to inhale repeatedly over several hours.
Effects on Brain and Body of Inhalant abuse
Repeated abuse of inhalants are addictive.
Inhalant effects are similar to that of alcohol- slurred speech, lack of coordination, dizziness , euphoria etc..  They can also experience hallucinations and delusions.  They may feel loss of control of self with light headedness and a lingering headache

The most common questionnaire for alcohol and drug use is the CAGE questionnaire
CAGE Questions
1. Have you ever felt you should cut down on your drinking?
2. Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
3. Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking?
4. Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover (eye-opener)?
CAGE Questions Adapted to Include Drug Use (CAGE-AID)
1. Have you ever felt you ought to cut down on your drinking or drug use?
2. Have people annoyed you by criticizing you’re drinking or drug use?
3. Have you felt bad or guilty about your drinking or drug use?
4. Have you ever had a drink or used drugs first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover (eye-opener)?
Scoring: Item responses on the CAGE questions are scored 0 for "no" and 1 for "yes" answers, with a higher score being an indication of alcohol problems. A total score of two or greater is considered clinically significant. However even one positive score indicates the presence of an alcohol / drug problem that requires treatment in the form of rehabilitation.

10. Did you ever borrow money to finance another person's addiction or associated crisis?
11. Have you ever sold anything to finance another person's addiction or associated crisis?
12. Were you reluctant to purchase necessary items because it may cause a disagreement?
13. Did your relationships make you care less of the welfare of yourself and your family?
14. Did you ever stay in a degrading or dangerous situation longer than you planned?
15. Have you ever dragged old hurts into discussions about current items?
16. Have you ever committed, or considered committing, and illegal act to finance someone's addiction?
17. Did your relationships cause you to have difficulty in sleeping?
18. Do arguments, disappointments or frustrations create within you an urge to change someone else?
19. Did you ever have an idea that if loved ones would only see things your way, life would be much better?
20. Have you ever considered self-destruction as a result of your reactions or relationships?

Answering yes to five or more of these questions is an indication that codependency has become a problem in your life.
If you test positive for either of the above tests you would need to consult a substance abuse counselor who will guide you to the next course of action required to be taken.
